Meeting on 20111117 Holocaust Trauma Intergenerational Transmission ( Dr Vivien Silbert )

8 pm Thursday 17th November 2011 at the Jewish Museum of Australia

This talk will examine the experience of being the daughter or granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor growing up in Australia. Long-term psychological effects and ways in which Holocaust trauma was transmitted from survivors to the second and third generations will be compared and discussed. The impact of the parenting received by the second generation on the way they parented their own children will also be addressed.
Dr Vivien Silbert is a practising psychologist with a special interest in trauma and the way in which early childhood experiences impact adult life. She has a keen interest in intergenerational transmission of trauma from Holocaust survivors to their offspring, a subject which formed the basis of her PhD thesis, and which is stimulated by her own background as the daughter of a Holocaust survivor.
